What are assistance animals? According to the Federal Fair Housing Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, an assistance animal is an animal that works, provides assistance, or performs tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability, or that provides emotional support that alleviates one or more identified effects of a person’s disability.
How should a tenant request a reasonable accommodation for an assistance animal? Requesting an accommodation is as simple as giving notice to your housing provider that you need one. You may do this orally or in writing; however, it is preferable to put the request in writing for documentation purposes. (Fair Housing Center Fact Sheet)
